Concert of Classical Musicrenginys

Sugihara Week Classical Music Concert will feature flutist Machiko Takahashi, violinists Yurina Arai and Reina Shibutani, and pianist Aki Maeda. At the moment, the musicians are engaged in concert activities mainly in Europe and all have already performed in Lithuania.
Soloists from Japan will be accompanied by pianist Kotryna Kaklauskaitė from Vytautas Magnus University Music Academy. The program will feature masterpieces of classical music and Japanese tunes which have been specially selected by each musician for Lithuanian audiences. More…

We invite you to attend the Sugihara Symposium which aims to discuss the great significance of Mr. Chiune Sugihara’s deed in the contemporary world. This event appreciates the friendship among Japanese, Jewish and Lithuanian people. Among other honorable guests, the Symposium will be attended by a member of the House of Councilors and Gifu prefecture, specialists from Japan and Lithuania, members of Jewish Community.

Screening of the Documentary about Chiune Sugihararenginys

During the Screening, a Documentary about Chiune Sugihara “Sugihara Survivers: Jewish and Japanese, Past and Future” (director: Junichi Kajioka) will be presented. The movie has never been shown in Lithuania before, and is the first of its genre for the director himself.
This a movie for everyone, not depending on age, nationality or religion. It is a movie about the good in a man and the courage to act with right intentions in difficult times, made to spread the memory of such a great man as Ch. Sugihara. More…

Japanese Kites Festivalrenginys

On September 7 at 12:00, during the Sugihara Week, the students of J. Dobkevičius Progymnasium will fly Japanese kites Rendako and Rokkaku. The kites made in Japan and Lithuania will fly with the wind and represent the dreams of children of both countries to live in a wonderful world, to enjoy freedom and to create a beautiful future. 30 Rendako kites made by the students of Iwate Prefecture High School and united into 3 long chains have been delivered to the Festival and are dedicated to the memory of victims of East Japan Great Earthquake (2011). Opening of Haiku Exhibition of Lithuanian Childrenrenginys

Poetry is another bridge connecting different cultures. During the Sugihara Week we will present the exhibition of Japanese verses (haiku) created by Lithuanian children. All these verses with beautiful pictures were created last year and participated in the international World Children’s Haiku Contest. The exhibition will be opened on September 7, 12:00, at J. Dobkevičius Progymnasium.
The 14th World Children’s Haiku Contest was held under the theme “Morning” during 2015 and 2016, and more than 26 thousand wonderful works were submitted from 36 countries and regions. More…

You will have unique chance to play the traditional Japanese drums!
The members of the Japanese Wadaiko drum group “Daigen-gumi” will teach the students of Music Academy, other musicians and music fans, how to play the Japanese drums on September 7th, 14:30, at the hall in VMU Music Academy (Čepinskio str. 5). They are ready to briefly demonstrate their music and explain the essences of Japanese drums, but after that – everything will be in your hands! During the Japanese and Jewish cultural workshops, held in the lobby of the VMU Great Hall on the 7th of September, we will focus on the cultural and economical state relationships. Here we will host a buzzing Arts and Crafts Fair.
In this exceptional event we will have representatives from the Gifu Prefecture and Yaotsu city (Japan), who will reveal the potential of their region and present the specialties and features of the prefecture. The Jewish heritage will be presented by a Bagel shop from Vilnius, which will treat us to delicious kosher meals. More…

For two days at the end of Sugihara week, we would like to invite you to the VMU Grand Hall foyer to familiarise yourselves with Japanese and Jewish cultures, which can be expressed in a variety of forms. This is the pinnacle of the entire event, enriching the festival with sights, sounds and even tastes. Participants representing Japanese, Lithuanian and Jewish communities will be present.
On the 7th of September, at 15:00 we invite you to join us at workshops, dedicated to calligraphy and a Japanese style of painting on stone, which both will be led by M. Kaneko, the mayor of Yaotsu town. More…
