Peter Heehs is an independent historian based in Pondicherry. He is the author of nine books, including The Bomb in Bengal and Nationalism, Terrorism, Communalism (OUP), Indian Religions (NYU Press), and The Lives of Sri Aurobindo (Columbia University Press). He has published more than fifty articles on Indian history, historiography and art in journals and magazines such as Modern Asian Studies, History and Theory, History Today and Art India.

The VMU Centre for Asian Studies would like to invite all those interested to attend a public lecture which will be given by a guest professor Dr Robert Parkin from Oxford University. The title of the lecture – Louis Dumont: hierarchy and equality in India and the West. The lecture will be given in English.

The lecture will take place on 17 April (Wednesday) 13:00-14:30 at Vytautas Magnus University, Faculty of Political Sciences and Diplomacy (Gedimino st. 44, Kaunas), Room 302. The event is free.

Exhibition “Kakejiku – Contemporary Art from Japan”renginys

Kakejiku is the traditional Japanese style of showing pictures and calligraphy. It is made of paper or cloth (mostly of silk), it can be scrolled when it is put away. Since old ages the Japanese used to hang kakejiku in their guest rooms to express the hospitality to their guests. We used to draw flowers, birds and landscapes on the kakejiku. For us, Japanese people, the four seasons had an important meaning, and we used to admire the beauty of changing nature. More…
