Lecture about Contemporary Art in China

Chinese curator Xia Yanguo’s lecture “The Present Situation of Contemporary Chinese Art – Through Several Exhibitions” will focus on the changes in Chinese contemporary art since 2010 and the current situation today. Through a series of independent projects and art gallery projects, he will analyze the current situation of Chinese art creation and art institutions (museums, non-profit institutions, etc.) in the context of globalization and how to deal with these challenges.

The lecture will be followed by a presentation and discussion on artist residency opportunities in China, the participants of which include the Cultural Attachée for the Embassy of the Republic of Lithuania in the People’s Republic of China Agnė Biliūnaitė, project space “Sodų 4” curator Milda Dainovskytė and Kaunas Artists’ House residency programme curator Edvinas Grinkevičius.

This May curators M. Dainovskytė, V. Michelkevičius and E. Grinkevičius conducted a research visit to China under the invitation of Cultural Attache Agnė Biliūnaitė. During the trip, they visited art institutions in Beijing and Shanghai which host residency programmes. In Beijing, the curators presented the Lithuanian context, their organisations and residency programmes. The purpose of this visit was to encourage partnerships between Lithuanian and Chinese art institutions and artists and to get acquainted with artist residency practices.

ABOUT THE CURATOR:

Xia Yanguo is an independent curator, art critic and founder of de Art Center(Non-profit, based in Beijing. He studied at the Department of Art History at the Central Academy of Fine Arts (CAFA) in China. He has acted as an art magazine editor, columnist for several art and fashion media outlets, the first visiting curator at Pro Helvetia, visiting research at National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea, special observer to Documenta, and art director at Red Brick Art Museum. He has been invited to give academic lectures and hold dialogues at a number of universities in China and abroad, like Peking University, Capital Normal University, Hongik University, Chung-Ang University, and Korea National University of Arts in Korea, Heideberg University in Germany and others.

Xia Yanguo closely follows the interaction between contemporary art and its social context, identifies and does research on local artists. In the past several years, he has also shown growing interest and made several successful attempts to review and and represent historical documents in Asia, promote the communication and exchange between contemporary art in Asia and the international art world, as well as discussed the role of non-profit organizations in China.

This event is a part of a series that follow the establishing of the KAH residency programme. The program of residences at Kaunas Artists’ House has been created in 2018 with the aim to present the most relevant contemporary artists, curators and cultural researchers working in Lithuania and abroad to the residents and guests of Kaunas city. The residency program aims to foster intercultural, cross-institutional and cross-sectoral cooperation, to provide artists and cultural producers with the opportunity to become acquainted with the historical and cultural context of the city during their residency, to facilitate their cooperation with other artists or cultural producers and local communities.
