Vaiva Bezhan is a Lithuanian-born artist based in Prague, Czech Republic. Vaiva received her Master’s degree in Art Photography from UJEP FUD, following her Bachelor’s degree in Graphic Design at Vienozinskis art faculty and additional studies in Turkey. Currently, Vaiva is studying her PhD in Art Communication at UJEP.

Vaiva’s interest in documentary photography began during her Master’s studies. She made a photo series on Roma people in the Czech Republic that was selected and exhibited at the National Gallery in Prague in 2012.

Since 2015, Vaiva is working as a photo-journalist. She has been reporting and creating visual stories from Turkey, Kosovo, Russia and Afghanistan, where she has already visited twice.

“Hope from the ashes: tales from Afghanistan” is Vaiva’s second photo exhibition on this topic, but the first in Lithuania. She is aiming to present the colorful, diverse, and constantly evolving face of Afghanistan. This country carries a fascinating history that resembles a time machine: from the ruins of Rumi’s ancient home to modern street art, from the brutal reality of war and its victims to the faces of playful children.
War has been raging for the last 40 years in Afghanistan, and at the first glimpse Afghan society is very conservative, but now a young generation is breaking down barriers, pouring into the streets, and fighting for their freedom and voice.
