Cultural Fair during VMU Asian Weekrenginys

As a part of VMU Asian Week, Culture Day will take place on March 8th. This event will provide you with a possibility to get to know Japanese, Chinese and Korean cultures better by offering a wide range of different attractions.

The Culture Day will begin with a demonstration of tea ceremony, performed by the wife of Japan ambassador to Lithuania. After the performance we will invite you to enjoy all the attractions offered in our cultural fair.

Our guests from Poland – Korean Cultural Centre – will introduce you Korean alphabet Hangul and will provide you with a chance to try on Korean traditional clothes Hanbok as well as try out some games. More…

March 9th – martial arts day! This year the martial arts day is moving to Lithuanian sports university. During probably the most active day of VMU Asian week, you will have an opportunity to not only see six different Asian martial arts, but also try most of them yourself.

During the event you’ll have a chance to see not only well known Japanese martial art karate, but also less familiar martial arts like wushu or aikido.

The Center for Korean Studies of the University of Latvia in cooperation with the Centre for Asian Studies (Vytautas Magnus University) is organizing the 3rd Baltic Seminar on Korean Studies that will be held on April 21-22 at VMU Small Hall and Putvinskio st. 23-312. The seminar will attract participants not only from the Baltic states but also from Sweden, Finland, South Korea and other countries. The first half of the seminar will be focused on discussing the situation of Korean studies in the Baltic States while the remaining part will be dedicated to presentations about Korean language.

The event is free and open for everyone to attend.

Taiwan’s Dynamic Civil Societyrenginys

The Centre for Asian Studies is inviting everyone interested in East Asia and especially in Taiwan to one more “Time for Asia” event. This time we are honored to have a lecture “Taiwan’s Dynamic Civil Society” presented by the Head of the Taipei Mission in Latvia Mr. Rong-Chuan Wu. Mr. Wu will talk about Taiwan’s social activists, non-governmental organizations, their domestic and international achievements, as well as civil society’s impact to Taiwan’s democracy and development. The event will be held on April 24 (Monday) from 11:15 at Donelaicio st. 52, room 422.

Rong-Chuan Wu was appointed to Taipei Mission in Latvia in August, 2016. Before that, he represented Taiwan in Canada, USA, Dominica and other countries. More…

Public lecture “Stalin’s Great Famine in Soviet Kazakhstan” in Vilniusrenginys

The famine in Kazakhstan during the first half of the 1930s was the most severe of the Soviet regional famines triggered by collectivization, in terms of percentage of population. Approximately a quarter (1.5 million) of the total victims of the Soviet collectivization famines lived in Kazakhstan. The Kazakhs, before the famine the biggest pastoral nomadic people in Eurasia, suffered more than any other national group in the Soviet Union, as approximately one third of them died between 1931 and 1933.
