One of the most known works of Omar Khayyam is ‘Rubaiyat‘, where author analyzes life difficulties such as the problem of human existence, self-realization and it also tells about absurdity of our actions in daily life. Khayyam is a wise teacher who uses a lot of metaphors to stress that tangible things as well as life are temporary. According to him, we can feel happiness and gladness, when we are treasuring and enjoying every minute. Although in this work we can see tensity and disappointment, author with criticism and humour expresses particular situation. The main aspects of the ‘Rubaiyat‘ are wine and love for woman.
In the centre of literary work is the person, who thinks that wine is the only way to feel happiness in his life. Wine lend him a helping hand to forget bad luck and meaninglessness of existence as well. The individual has this point of view because he feels unhappy, condemned and his life ambitions are not fulfilled. Khayyam writes very straight about people psychology and relations with wine. Moreover, ‘Rubaiyat‘not only analyses that time problems, but also fits for 21th century`s society. To understand our existence, capability to find our place in the public society and self-knowing are the main difficulties for ‘Rubaiyat‘character and also for modern people.
The second very important aspect in the ‘Rubaiyat\’ is the relationship between man and woman. Females in the poetry come across as being, namely, passion, pleasure and beauty symbols. Feelings for the woman can be good motivation for man, it also can give the emotional satisfaction and the desire to excel. Indeed, it can give opposite feelings as well, in particular, distrust, despair and sadness. According to the main character love and passion for the person are one of the noblest and painful feelings at the same time.
Furthermore, ‘Rubaiyat‘ is the poetry, which provides eternal questions of existence and highlights relationships with the God. The main character does not believe in God anymore because he does not feel any support. The person thinks that praying and believing in something is meaningless. To the character mind, his fate is unsuccessful and he tends to blame on the God. Islam is the religion, which is represented in this literary work because the Quran is the main symbol.
Omar Khayyam – (1048-1131) Persian astronomer, philosopher, mathematician and poet as well.
