The lecture tries to trace why Modern Indian Art and particularly regional arts of South India turn time and again towards folk traditions for inspiration and to comprehend how the discourse of Traditional vs Modern manifests in recognizing and addressing issues of identity in Contemporary Indian Art. Much has been discussed on how Folk art became a necessary point of departure during movements such as “Revivalism”, “Indigenism”, etc. The lecture will map the relevance of folk artistic practices in the lives and art of its people within the socio political realm of a region which saw a continuous struggle as well as success in laying claim to its cultural and political significance with the formation of the new state of Telangana in 2014. In this milieu, Dr. Biluka Nirmala maps how a folk art practice, specifically belonging to Telangana region negotiate with the contemporary art? And whether these negotiations help in forming and proclaiming a distinctive identity.
